We are delighted that we have today been award our Sun Safe Nursery Accreditation!
We all love it when summer finally arrives and the sun graces us with its presence, but in order for life-long health it is so important for the children in our care to learn sun safety from a young age.
To gain our accreditation, we have had to raise awareness of sun safety, the risks associated with UV as well as how to prevent skin cancer and how to recognise early signs and symptoms. We have done this through communicating with parents, sharing our sun safety policy and distributing information leaflets.
Our main focus however, has been the practical application of being safe in the sun. We already have a robust sun-safety policy in place, but gaining the accreditation has provided us with lots of resources in order to teach the children about staying safe in the sun in a fun and engaging way. We've enjoyed exploring books about sun safe superstars and listening to the 'Slip, Slop, Slap' song, as well as discussing UV levels with the children during circle times, which has lead to lots of chats about the weather!
The children are now really pro-active in preparing for being in the sun when going outside. They know they need to put on a hat and have sun-cream applied and they are very good at telling the staff that this needs to happen!
We're super proud that we have achieved our accreditation, but more importantly we're happy that we're teaching children to be safe and healthy when enjoying the sun.
So remember, to slip on a t-shirt, slop on some sun-cream and slap on a hat!
