At Banana Moon Barnstaple, we love watching little hands get creative — because those early scribbles are an important step in every child’s learning journey. Our recent Monday Mark-Making activity gave the children the opportunity to explore drawing, painting and creating their own unique marks
Mark-making activities encourage children to experiment with different tools, colours and textures while expressing their ideas freely. Whether it’s using crayons, paintbrushes or stamps, children are able to explore their creativity and develop confidence as they create their own artwork.
While it may look like simple play, mark-making is an important milestone in early childhood development. These activities help children build the foundational skills they need as they begin their early writing journey.
Through mark-making, children develop a range of important skills including:
- Fine motor development as they strengthen the muscles in their hands and fingers
- Hand-eye coordination while learning to control tools such as pencils and paintbrushes
- Creativity and self-expression as they experiment with different shapes, colours and patterns
- Understanding their world by representing ideas and experiences through their marks
Every scribble, line and doodle is a step toward early writing. By giving children the freedom to explore mark-making in a fun and supportive environment, we help nurture their curiosity, confidence and love of learning.
It’s always wonderful to see the children proudly sharing their creations and enjoying the magical beginnings of writing through play.
