At Banana Moon Barnstaple, we love creating opportunities that spark curiosity and imagination through play.
Recently, our Mini Moons explored an exciting “invitation to play” activity, where a selection of blocks and resources were thoughtfully set out to inspire the children to build their very own rockets. With no set instructions, the children were free to explore, create and bring their ideas to life.
As the children began building, it was wonderful to see their creativity unfold. Some carefully stacked blocks to make tall rockets, while others experimented with different shapes and designs. When things didn’t quite work the first time, the children showed great determination—adjusting, rebuilding and trying again.
Activities like this may look simple, but they support a wide range of important learning and development. Through block play, children are able to explore early problem-solving, develop their fine motor skills and begin to understand concepts such as balance and structure.
Imaginative play also played a big part in this activity. Once their rockets were complete, the children began creating their own space adventures—talking about where they might travel and what they might discover. These moments help to build confidence in communication and support early language development.
This activity supports several areas of our Early Learning and Development Programme, which therefore meets different areas of the EYFS including:
Communication and Language as children share ideas and stories
Physical Development through building and manipulating blocks
Personal, Social and Emotional Development by developing confidence and resilience
Expressive Arts and Design through creativity and imaginative play
By providing open-ended, child-led activities like this, we encourage children to explore their own ideas, develop independence and enjoy the process of learning through play.
We look forward to seeing what our Mini Moons create next 🚀✨
