Creating Calm Spaces to Support Children’s Emotional Wellbeing

At Banana Moon Barnstaple, creating a warm, welcoming and nurturing environment is at the heart of everything we do.

We are excited to introduce our new cosy area in the Full Moons room — a calm and comforting space designed to support children’s emotional wellbeing. With soft furnishings, gentle lighting and a peaceful atmosphere, the area provides a quiet place where children can relax, unwind and take a moment for themselves.

Throughout the day, children experience a range of emotions as they play, learn and interact with others. Having a dedicated calm space allows them to step away when needed, helping them to feel safe, secure and supported.

Children use the cosy area in many different ways. Some may choose to sit quietly with a book, others may enjoy a moment of calm with soft cushions, and some may simply take time to rest and recharge before returning to play. These moments are important in helping children learn how to recognise and manage their feelings.

Spaces like this play a key role in supporting children’s development. They help to build:

Emotional awareness as children begin to understand their feelings
Self-regulation skills by learning how to calm themselves
Confidence and security through a safe and supportive environment
Independence as children learn to make choices about their needs

Our team is always on hand to gently support and guide children, helping them to feel understood and reassured. By creating environments that prioritise emotional wellbeing, we support each child in developing the confidence and resilience they need as they grow.
